The Basics of Tooth Extraction - Spotsylvania Oral Surgery

Having a Tooth Extraction in adulthood is sometimes necessary.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction
There are a number of reasons why tooth extraction may be needed. A tooth that is too badly damaged is a very common reason. Other reasons include:

A crowded mouth:  Sometimes dentists pull teeth to prepare the mouth for orthodontia which helps to properly align the teeth, which may not be possible if your teeth are too big for your mouth. Likewise, if a tooth cannot break through the gum (erupt) then your dentist may recommend pulling it.

Risk of infection: If your immune system is compromised (for example, if you are receiving chemotherapy or are having an organ transplant), even the risk of infection in a particular tooth may be reason enough to teeth extraction.

Periodontal (Gum) Disease:  If periodontitis -- an infection of the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth -- have caused loosening of the teeth, it's going to be necessary to pull the tooth or teeth.

What to Expect With Tooth Extraction
Dentists and oral surgeons (dentists with special training to perform surgery) perform tooth extractions. Before tooth extraction, the dentist will give you an injection of a local dulling to numb the area where the tooth will be removed.

Precautions
While the extraction of a tooth is quite safe but the patient who has a condition that puts him or her at a high risk of severe infection might need to take antibiotics prior to and after the extraction.

It is necessary for patients should report their full medical history, medications, and even the supplements they take to the dentist/oral surgeon prior to the extraction.

Recovery
In most cases, the recovery period lasts a few days. But if the patient feels pain too great, then they can take painkillers. It will help to minimize bleeding.

Do not rinse or spit in the six hours following the extraction so the clot remains intact. Refrain from smoking as it can prevent healing.
